Romance Scam Story

A reddit report about a romance scam that cost someone Amount not specified. Learn how to avoid falling victim.

This happened about a year ago but it still sits with me in a really weird way. I was a student at the time and honestly not doing great financially, so when I got this 2-day “paid volunteering” thing with a bakery in Gurgaon, I took it seriously. We had already discussed pay (₹1500–₹2000/day + travel), so I travelled almost 2 hours from Sonipat to Cyber Hub for it. They were already late, but I stayed and worked the whole day. I was handling sales/marketing and I genuinely put in effort...I made around 25-35 sales myself, kept updating them, even helped when we ran out of stock and had to carry and restock everything. I barely sat. I barely took breaks. I just wanted to do well. At one point I stepped away for like 10–15 minutes and took one call from my dad. That’s it. And then out of nowhere, I get a call saying “your work is done, you can leave.” I asked about payment and she just said I wouldn’t be paid. No discussion. Just that. She said I was “roaming around all day,” “taking calls,” and “not making sales,” which honestly felt so unfair because I knew how much I had done. I tried explaining but she just said “do whatever you want” and cut the call. I even asked her to at least cover my travel and she refused that too. I remember just standing there feeling so small and helpless. I had travelled 2 hours, worked the whole day, and suddenly it was like none of it counted. I called my dad and just cried. It’s been a year and I’ve moved on, but I still think about it sometimes...not even just about the money, but how easily someone can treat you like that when you’re trying your best. If anyone’s wondering, I’m honestly okay naming the place if needed. I just didn’t have the energy or confidence back then to deal with the aftermath of calling them out.
