Threatening voicemail with death threats

A reddit report about a phishing scam that cost someone Amount not specified. Learn how to avoid falling victim.

Yesterday I received a phone call. It did say suspected scam so I didn't pick up, but they left a voicemail. It was about a minute long, mostly in a foreign language, but with a few English phrases, such as something "email your family" and "you will die, you will die" and then something like save this message. There was a lot of background noise and did sound a bit like a call centre potentially, definitely a busy background. It obviously freaked me out and I did end up reporting it to the police, but I just don't really understand the point of it. I also can't really see anything online mentioning threats like this. So is this a common scam?
