Spoofed iMessage with Leaked Info

A reddit report about a phishing scam that cost someone Amount not specified. Learn how to avoid falling victim.

My fiancée just got an iMessage from his own phone number. They sent multiple nudes, and outdated personal info like his parents' names, their house information, etc., to a group chat with multiple people in his family. They wanted money obviously. He blocked the number and took screenshots, but we're wondering if this is a hack on his Apple ID or his phone itself. I've heard of this happening but never experienced it. We're planning on making a new Apple ID and new emails associated with it, but looking for any other pointers or things to look for.
