I had an interesting encounter with what I think were scammers. I received a call from a phone number associated with my bank. I'm 100% sure the phone number shown on the caller ID was legit, but I also know that can be spoofed.
I answered the call and the guy said he was with the fraud department and asked me to review various charges that I said I did not authorize. He then asked me to verify how much was in my accounts to "make sure no fraudulent charges went through." I told him the approximate amount. He then replied I was breaking up and asked me to repeat myself. I did, and again he asked me to repeat myself. We then either got cut off or he hung up.
A couple of minutes later, I got a call from the same number for my bank. This time it was a woman asking me to review fraudulent charges, and again she asked me to verify the amount that should be in my account. Just like the first time, she made me repeat myself three times. She then said a fraud specialist would call back within an hour (no one contacted me again).
After the second call, I was suspicious and called my bank. I told them what happened and I was told that no one had contacted me. They also told me they wouldn't call me this late and wouldn't ask me to state the amount.
I went ahead and changed my password just to be sure. I'm pretty sure the two phone calls were scammers, but I'm not sure what the game was.
