I got a call from Virgin Media today. They told me that they needed to send me a new SIM card. I think I gave them my email address and then told them the passcode that was sent to my phone via text from Virgin Media. I realized it was a scam 10 minutes in and hung up.
I called Virgin Media straight away and they told me that the scammers had placed an order for an iPhone contract on my account. The guy from Virgin Media confirmed that they weren't able to change my address or email. He's put my account on lock while the fraud team investigates this. I've also frozen all my bank account cards just in case.
Is there anything else I should do? Should I order new bank cards? Should I report this to my bank account?
In hindsight, there were many signs I missed, so here's a list of red flags for anyone else:
- The scammers called from a random number.
- As soon as I hung up on them, they tried calling me as many as 15 times.
- They said they needed to replace my SIM, in reality a company would either email that information or just send the new SIM in the post.
- They asked me to provide the passcode sent via text. It literally says in the text message not to share this with anyone, but I was an idiot and didn't read it lol 🤦♀️
- They had a really confusing reason for needing to send me a new SIM card and they made it sound urgent by telling me I would lose my phone service in the next few days.
- I got passed onto a 'supervisor', I don't know if this is a red flag but it made me think the call was legit.
- They gave me a call back number in case the call got disconnected. I thought that was weird, would I just call back on the Virgin Media number?
