I got a text from Robin Hood (the financial app) claiming someone tried to access my account. They gave a reference number and a number to call.
I immediately opened the app and changed my password and security info. Then I tried to call Robin Hood, but I went in circles looking for a valid number for them. So I called the number from the text using another phone that isn't associated with my account (someone else's phone, because I needed my phone to check the app and the text).
The person I called claimed my account was accessed from Russia and Ghana. They asked a bunch of questions to confirm I wasn't out of the country or committing fraud. They based everything on that reference number. They didn't really ask my name. I wouldn't give them my cell phone info, my device login details, or how I access Robin Hood. They said there would be an investigation and told me not to make any big moves on my account. They said the person tried to withdraw money, which is what triggered the text (I don't withdraw money or anything). They said I'd get an email when the investigation was done. Which is crazy, in retrospect, because I didn't give my email.
Today, feeling curious, I called that number back twice, and the guy on the other end hung up on me both times. Was this a phishing scam or something? What would be the angle? They're trying to see how much money I have in my account? I told them there was no money in there and any scammer was just going to get their feelings hurt. Maybe that's why they didn't bother.
