Parent sent a text to my sibling and me saying, "My computer, Wi-Fi has been hacked, on the phone Apple. Don't call, will call you."
Naturally alarm bells went off. We immediately interrupted the call and got parent off the phone. We got in touch with Apple, changed her password, and called the banks to lock down cards.
Parent said they were looking at Sam's Club's website and got a pop-up saying her computer and Wi-Fi had been hacked and to call a number. They called the number, and the person claimed to be from Apple, provided an Apple employee ID and a direct line in case they got disconnected. They got disconnected. Parent called the new number, and that person asked for their address, which parent provided.
That's as far as it got before we interrupted. Parent unplugged Wi-Fi and the computer. After resetting the Apple password with Apple, parent plugged the computer and Wi-Fi back in, and the computer seems to be fine.
How bad is it that the scammer has parent's address, phone number, and name? Sibling and I don't live with parent, but we're doing remote coaching essentially. What else do we need to ask her?
