Muralist Check Scam Targets Small Artist

A reddit report about a phishing scam that cost someone $2000.0. Learn how to avoid falling victim.

For context, I'm a small artist and I just started posting on a portfolio site. She found me there, emailed me, then asked for my Discord. She claims she's a muralist, and when I go to her portfolio, she has photos of some murals she's done. Anyway, I thought this was fine until she brought up the check being sent to my email and then I would have to send her the money for materials from said check. Here's her message that made it seem fine: *About the mural I actually have clients that i make art piece for which she supplies to companies and school that want art for school decoration and art purposes, So As the artist my job is to ask for a permission from the owner of the art piece and relay information back to my client.* *So my client intends to make payments as soon as possible so the piece can be completed before next week and i can also send you a copy of it when it's done.* Here's the one where my alarm bells went off: *Alright about the credit my client will be paying through checks and it will be written in your name and sent to your email since in collaboration* *And the check of $2,000 will be sent to you for the project by my client while your cut from that would be $500, I will use the remaining to get the painting and also take the remaining profit for my service. Hopefully, that should be encouraging enough, though it might seem on the low side* This just seems really iffy to me. Also sorry for the layout, I'm on mobile.
