Received a message request on Instagram from someone who said they had a question for me. At first, it already felt suspicious because they werenât following me and we had no mutuals.
They said they wanted to use my profile picture as a reference for a painting and that I would get paid. At first I believed they wanted it to âpractice,â but things quickly got weird.
They said their âsponsorâ would send me a $1000 check and that I would keep $200 while the rest would go toward their art materials. That was already a red flag.
I told them they didnât need to pay me at all since they said they were just practicing. Then they insisted that âby lawâ I had to get paid or they could face court orders or legal action. And also for our collaboration to work they needed proof of payment. That made absolutely no sense and confirmed for me that it was a scam.
They also asked what bank I use, which is another major red flag.
I ended the conversation and didnât give them any personal information.
Just posting this so others are aware, please be careful with random Instagram messages like this. Donât give out your email, bank info, or deposit checks from strangers. These scams can look very friendly at first.
I didnât screenshot all of the receipts and I thought I did, sigh.
