I'm a freelancer, and got a text from a potential client:
"Hi, we found you on BBB.org. My partner and I are currently looking for a professional Graphic designer in Virginia for our business. Are you available?"
I said yes, they replied:
"Thanks for getting back to us. Would you be available for a quick Google Meet call with my partner and me? We'd like to share more details and confirmed we're speaking with you directly, just to avoid any issues as we've had a bad experience before."
I said yes, asked for a good date/time. They replied:
"Today. Also, please send your best email address so we can forward the Google Meet invitation, since it will be a joint call. Thank you."
I shared my email, they sent an invite, and asked me to join using my desktop.
"It can only work on desktop."
The email invite had a button link with "meeeting" (three e's). Then they followed up:
"Please join from a PC or laptop as I have scheduled our Google session in desktop mode on my computer. On your PC, click Join Google Meeting after opening the Google invitation email or calendar event. Then, let the browser launch Google, enter the passcode if asked, and select Join with Computer Audio. If at all possible, mute upon entry. I can help you if you need it."
I searched the names, and one belongs to a real estate agent in Virginia. But her email address has another person's name, and is attached to the website Lemoyneen(.org), which is under construction.
I was suspicious and lied that I only had a phone available today, and I could set up a zoom meeting, do a phone call, or just meet another day.
They replied: "We set it on desktop mode it won't work without desktop We've been using this for our business sorry."
Was this legit or a scam?
