Fake FBI calls target my mother over arrest warrant

A reddit report about a phishing scam that cost someone Amount not specified. Learn how to avoid falling victim.

Hi, I’m writing this in hopes of getting some answers or some peace of mind in my situation. My mom started getting phone calls from an out-of-state number saying that they were FBI and they knew where she was and knew exactly what she had done that morning and where she went. For example, she went to the bank and it was closed, so she walked home. They called saying, “I know you were just at the bank and it was closed.” They spam called her around midnight (odd hours) saying that she had an arrest warrant (which I now know the FBI won’t ever call and tell you that, and there is a different way of serving arrest warrants). They also texted her and said just her name, but they got her last name wrong. Me being the confrontational person I am, I called them from my phone (dumb decision, I know). They didn’t answer, and then I called through a TextNow number. They answered and gave me their “name” and said she was going to be arrested for supposed “money laundering with someone over Facebook Messenger.” I personally handle all of the family bank accounts because my parents don’t really know how to work their phones, and my mom’s bank accounts have gotten hacked before, very recently actually, and this person gave me those same details of the accounts being closed. They knew our home address (I currently do not live at home) and they have her phone number and email. I hung up with this person and called the local FBI office in my hometown, where I was told this person was not an agent and this was a fake number, etc. So that was resolved in a sense. I was told by the person I spoke with that she has to file a report, and if there’s anything suspicious at home or wherever she is, to call 911 and let them know about the situation and that we’ve spoken with the FBI. What worries me is that this person has all of her information on where to contact and find her. Since I’ve spoken with the FBI, there has been no further contact with her or myself, and I am currently waiting on a call back from an office to file this police report with her. I am not in a situation to go home right now because of work, and I just got back from a leave at work, so I am not able to go back home until I have my next days off. What I’m wondering is if anyone else has been through something similar or has any advice on what to do in this situation?
