Self-Checkout Receipt Redirect at Walmart

A reddit report about a other scam that cost someone Amount not specified. Learn how to avoid falling victim.

I went to the self-checkout at Walmart and found that someone had already entered their Walmart account info into the machine and left without scanning any items. I scanned my items as usual, and was about to request a digital receipt when I noticed the receipt would be sent to the scammer’s phone number, not mine. I called the attendant over and she cleared it for me. It occurred to me that someone could enter their info into the self-checkout, have a receipt sent to their phone, then go grab a high-value item from the shelves and “return” it to customer service for cash. Has anyone else encountered this? Am I missing something that would prevent this scam?
