Fake Sheriff's Caller Hangs Up When Questioned

A reddit report about a other scam that cost someone Amount not specified. Learn how to avoid falling victim.

This was too convincing to not post. The only giveaway was the pushiness of the caller, the caller didn't have a local accent, and the caller sounded more like a collection agent rather than someone from the Sheriff's Department. The call started with: "Hello, [Salutation][Last Name], this is [INSERT NAME HERE] from [Local Jurisdiction] Sheriff's Department calling about [insert plausible infraction here]... is this [Salutation][Last Name]?" I paused, didn't answer immediately, and they said, "Hello? Hello?" I said, "Hello?" They asked again. I asked who was calling. They gave a name, and from the previously stated place. They then proceeded to try and tell me that I was being contacted for an absentee-federal-something-or-other. They asked if I was aware of this, and I said, "Umm... no?" They then jabbered off some other things before I said, "Whoa... hold on... this all sounds very similar to a scam call. How can I call and verify the information you are giving me?" They then responded with, "Alright, I'll tell you what, I'll hang up the phone now and you'll see these on your record." Then hung up the phone. Just in case, I looked up the name they gave at the local jurisdiction's directory and found nothing... but... thought I'd share.
