The cancer story car park scam at UK services

A reddit report about a impersonation scam that cost someone Amount not specified. Learn how to avoid falling victim.

Hello all, I think I have avoided a scam or I'm just heartless. I parked at a services in the UK to charge my car and someone approached me asking for money. As soon as the person approached me he offered a very weak handshake and said his wife or partner had stage 4 cancer and proceeded to show me a picture of who I can only presume is his wife. All I said back was ok with a deadpan face. He then proceeded to show me a bank card with a damaged chip. I presume to try and make me believe him more. I said "I don't carry cash and I only have a card that doesn't allow me to draw money out" (a clear lie). Then he went up to a different car and tried again. I've watched him hover around the EV charging bays for a while now and approach people on their own and not in groups. Wondering if anyone is aware this is a scam or if I'm too untrusting in people. Thank you. Edit: Thank you all for confirming what I thought.
