Scam Prevention Guide - $750.0 Lost

A reddit report about a impersonation scam that cost someone $750.0. Learn how to avoid falling victim.

So i found a Noctua GPU for £750 but on ebay it’s £1350, so i thought wow what a steal. i have been buying stuff off ebay and vinted since the dawn of time and i’ve found some insanely nice deals. Stuff worth thousands i have bought for hundreds, stuff worth hundreds i’ve bought for a couple pounds. So yes i’ve been very lucky in my journey of buying second hand stuff. So when i saw that GPU i thought wow another lucky day for me. Anyways i messaged the guy an he said to either pick it up or send him a deposit of £375 and when it arrives at my door step, i can send the rest of the money. Obviously i asked for more photos of the GPU and he did, he even unboxed it for me and all photos look super legit, not like AI. i then said because his location is a 8 hour drive i will prefer postage, if i can just send the money. he said he will only accept bank transfer and not ebay, vinted, paypal, or anything else because HMRC will know he is reselling stuff and he will be taxed after £1000. The GPU is definitely real and authentic, there are no fakes of that one anywhere online, he sent me his ID and a video of his ID too. but when he sent me a photo of the gpu with the date next to it, it looked like the writing was super pixelated and i asked for a video and he said i’m asking for too much and so he’s going to another buyer now. He was very polite and kind, gave me his number, ID, video of ID and his alleged post code. So all in all do you think this whole thing could still be a scam considering he’s pricing it almost half of its value. He said he bought it at a garage sale and it’s brand new, he unboxed it just to show me. Also side note: i can no longer pick it up he said (if i wanted to make the drive), because he said he needs the money today now and that someone else is going to bank transfer him and do what i was going to do. so now there’s no chance to go to him in person. What do you guys think? would you personally send him that bank transfer deposit before him shipping it or would you just leave it and assume it’s a scam?
