Scam Prevention Guide

A reddit report about a impersonation scam that cost someone Amount not specified. Learn how to avoid falling victim.

I've been getting a bunch of ads today from an organization called ICRR. These ads follow a general pattern of a supposed 60-ish year old vulnerable person who is at risk of being homeless, making a plea to the camera for help for their specific case. It then links to a donation page which supposedly is for said person's benefit, with no explanation of the platform being used. At the bottom of the page, there's a note that: "ICRR is a 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization (TAX ID 35-2220327) Your donation is tax deductible within the guidelines of U. S. law." There is also an integrated Stripe payment flow, which seems a little unusual for a scam. After some elementary digging on the IRS site, I found the ID to link to Islamic Center of Round Rock, a small local mosque in Texas. At the very minimum, this series of ads is misleading- the funds are being redirected to a religious organization which appears to have little to do with these charity cases, one, for example being a Christian in Massachusetts. (I assume from the use of "god bless" rather than "inshallah"). I'd personally think this fraud though, I doubt these charity cases really exist. The Youtube channel the (unlisted) ad was posted on was created March 31st, so I'm assuming this is a recent campaign. I'm making this post to try to see how common these ads are and to warn people that they are probably not giving money to the people they think they are.
