Gift Card Scam via 3-Way Balance Call

Every now and then I get a gift card that I can't or won't use, and I sell it online on Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace. Someone called to purchase the card, but asked me to call the number on the back in a three-way call with them on the line to verify the balance before they came to pick it up. The person never showed up, and when I checked the balance again, the gift card balance was $0. This is the second time this has happened to me. The first time was a few years ago. The only thing I can think of is that they have some sort of software that can identify the numbers I push. Does anyone have an idea how this is happening?
