Fake Escort Extortion Threats to Me and My Family

A reddit report about a impersonation scam that cost someone $400.0. Learn how to avoid falling victim.

So on Saturday I received a missed call from an unknown mobile phone number. Then shortly afterwards I received a text message that basically said that I had made contact with an escorting service and hadn’t shown up for my appointment. Then shortly afterwards another text demanded I send them a sum of £400 for the girl's loss of earning, then went on to actually threaten myself and my family with violence. I am aware that this is quite a common scam and I have seen several posts on here from people who have been a bit silly or got drunk and actually contacted escorts resulting in this scam. I have obviously blocked the number with no contact whatsoever but what is really upsetting me is I have genuinely, never, ever and never would even dream of contacting any escorting service. I’m happy with my wife and 2 kids and would never do anything that includes hurt or betrayal. Is it worth reporting this incident to the police as the text was basically a threat of violence? I cannot believe the extent these scammers will go to, to try and scare people out of money these days and could even potentially ruin someone’s life.
