Just putting it out there in case someone gets the call I did and searches for these two companies. I received a scam call today targeted at their customers. I am a Con Ed customer in NYC. Direct Energy is apparently one of the indirect suppliers Con Ed customers can choose (though I haven't). I got a mobile call purporting to be from Con Ed, showing their name and customer service number on caller ID. They told me that Direct Energy was splitting from them and trying to steal their customers, so if I wanted to stay with Con Ed I needed to talk to Direct Energy and cancel my contract with them, otherwise I'd need all new equipment and would not be a Con Ed customer anymore. I said I'd look into it and call Direct Energy, but she offered to transfer me. I said fine. I then got transferred to someone purporting to be from Direct Energy, who confirmed the info and said that my service would be shut off later today so they can install new equipment. He said "if you get a copy of your Con Ed bill, I can show you where it says you are already in a contract with Direct Energy." At this point, I said I'm hanging up and doing some research, and then will reach out to the companies at their official numbers. I hung up and immediately got a call back from the alleged Con Ed number. She pressured me to allow her to transfer me again so I could cancel the Direct Energy contract. I hung up and called Con Ed and Direct Energy directly, and confirmed none of this was real. I don't know what the plan was, but probably the alleged Direct Energy guy was going to try to get credit card or bank or log-in information.
