This has been going on for several years and there’s really nothing anyone can do to stop it. The scammers have cloned state medical board numbers. They call physicians, PAs, and NPs saying there is a problem with your license; typically inappropriate prescribing of controlled substances or insurance fraud related to prescriptions that constitutes drug trafficking. They cite your license, NPI, and DEA numbers and that makes it seem legit, but that’s all public information. They will speak to you only by phone and try to exchange documents only by fax. They will use a generic name like William Henderson but then have a heavy accent. They’ll claim the FBI is investigating you. The only way to preserve your license and get out of this is to wire them money as fines from charges you’ve already been convicted of. That isn’t how the American court system works. I’m honestly not sure how literal brain surgeons are falling for this crap, but they are. Especially newly licensed people are terrified to lose the career they just spent 10 years and $200k working to achieve. If you get a call like this, hang up and call the phone number publicly listed for your licensing board. Ask for that person. As a proactive measure, call your state board and ask how you would be contacted if there is a problem with your license. Typically it’s USPS certified mail with signature.
