Here's the story: last night I'm leaving a bar downtown and a young woman approaches me and says she needs help getting home ... phone dead or broke or some shit. I'm in a good mood and I don't like this situation for this woman, so I think, 'fuck it, I'll pay it forward.' I order her a Lyft to the address she requested, wait with her till the guy picks her up, and off they go. At this point, I'm thinking I did something good for somebody in need, and like... it's the cost of a taxi... even if she didn't *need need* it and this was some sob story to get a free ride, whatever. This is not what I'm worried about. I'm watching the progress on the Lyft app. Seems like she gets dropped off but then I get a call from the Lyft driver, the woman is on the phone. Says something about being locked out and was hoping I could get the Lyft to drive her back downtown. I say 'no,' the driver gets her out of the car. Was this a scam? An attempt at a scam? I can't figure it out. I checked in with Lyft support, I was only charged for the ride I booked. I requested they check the driver's safety, and was told he kept accepting rides, kept working, so everything seemed fine. Just a weird experience ... I know some scams pray on a good samaritan type, but if there was an angle here, I can't figure it out. Edit: As many commenters have pointed out, this was a foolish and risky thing to do for reasons beyond getting scammed.
